An
important area of communication that is frequently ignored is humor. Humor is a
powerful area of communication that can make the conversation interesting to
catch other’s attention. Generally people tend to link funny with smart. That
is because with humor most complicated or difficult situations can be made
light and humor can be used to convey the most difficult ideas in a very
soothing way. Humor can be an important aspect of communication in small group
to build relationships. Also humor can ease the group anxiety and keep the ball
rolling further. Humor is appreciated by everyone and can help mold the mood of
the group positive. As mentioned in the book humor has many advantages in small
group communication such as share messages, relieve tension, support group
fantasies, integrate ideas, support common values, convey messages and meaning
to people and help listener acceptance.
To
illustrate humor in small group communication, I am going to use the example of
my family. When all my family gets together we are about 7 of us in the US. My
uncle Dash is real fun to be with because of his humorous talks. Every time we
have a family get together, he cracks such funny jokes that even a serious
family event becomes memorable. Without him the tension among elders on any
complicated issue remains unresolved.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post about humor. Humor can be a powerful area of communication and it can catch others attention. It also can be ignored if someone doesn’t find something funny or understand the humor that is trying to take place. Humor can lighten a stressful or difficult situation and smooth things over like you mentioned. I like how you said that in small groups, humor can ease the groups anxiety and keep the ball rolling. I have been in a group setting and humor has came into play and it did make things easier for everyone. It helped to break the ice and ease the tension that was there. I liked reading the example you used with your family and your uncle being the jokester. Great concept to talk about.
