Finding solutions to problems creatively

Creativity can device solutions to complicated problems easily.  My mother is the most creative person I have ever seen in this world.  I have never seen her cry helplessly because she cannot find a solution to a problem.  In fact in my childhood I have seen her struggling to survive with creative resolutions.  For example, to support our family she always felt like contributing in some way, but since my brother and me were small, she could not go to work.  So my mother decided to do something from home to make money.  She started writing for columns in local newspaper, she took tuitions so she could monitor us and yet work from home.  My mother used to sew beautiful quilts out of old bed sheets.  Her quilts business picked up quickly in my neighborhood.  She employed lower income  housewives to work for her from her home based small scale industry in order to cut high labor cost in commercial site and also empower these poor women.  She took all her businesses passionately and enjoyed working on them.  I am always inspired by her creativity in finding ways for solving problems.

  1. It sounds like you have a great role model in your life. It reminds us that creativity is not just about work or school and it is not always about finding ways to entertain yourself. Creativity is a survival tool and can be seen in many single mothers and even impoverished areas. Think about Honey Boo Boo. Her mom does everything under the sun to save money in their household. Things I never even dreamed of. Just when you think a family in their situation should be down on their luck, they are empowered in stead. Their mother gets a feeling of satisfaction and empowerment every time she makes ends meet in a creative and unconventional way. It keeps their family happy and strong. Now all they have to do is spend their money on something other than hot cheetos!! Your mom seems like she found strength in creating new ways to make money that also kept her close to her children and that she enjoyed doing. Everybody wins and she even had an unexpected result, her children being taught the power of that kind of creative thinking.

  2. Hello! Great post! Your personal experience is such an interesting story, thank you for sharing with us. I think that it's fascinating how the main cause of creativity is problem solving (At least that's how I see it). Like your mother she had a problem and had to find ways to solve it. Instead of coming up with generic solutions she used creative and innovative ways to do so. I am a gymnastics coach and we must do exactly that. Children get bored and distracted very easily so coming up with creative ways to do things is a must. But with every problem and creative solution there are barriers like stated in the book. For example in gymnastics, the most prominent barrier is perceptual barrier. Most coaches, and I'm guilty of this myself, learn how something is done one way and stick to it making the lessons stagnant. The challenge is to think outside the box, like your mom did, to change.
