Decision Making and Problem Solving

POST 3: DECISION MAKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING

Decision-making and problem solving are two interrelated processes that involve making choices. We all try to take the best possible decision in an attempt to resolve our problems optimally. Sometimes the constraints that restrict us from reaching our goal are complex, so we need to strategically design our plan of action in an attempt to overcome those intricacies. I found these six steps to effective decision-making and problem solving described in the book interesting:
1.     Define the goal: Investigating the difficulties in reaching the goal
2.     Examine: Finding the constraints preventing our achievement of the identified goal.
3.     Consider: Taking into consideration all the positive alternatives for responding to a problem.
4.     Initial Decision: Coming to the first decision after exploring possible alternatives.
5.     Develop: Once the decision is made, develop a plan of action to actually execute the decision
Evaluate: After execution of the decision evaluate the results and consequences.

  1. Just like you, I also found the steps involved in decision-making to be interesting. While it is ideal to follow those steps, in my opinion, steps 1-3 get ignored all the time. For instance, it is too easy for small groups to go into something with no goal in mind (like the results needed to be achieved). Especially with no goal in mind, the constraints and alternatives are not considered as well. In groups that I worked with in the past, while a goal was established, no one ever wanted to bring up the discussion of constraints and alternatives since it was seen as a waste of time and energy. What I had came to realize was that if the time and energy was not invested in it then, it would only lead to bigger headaches later. Again, I was glad you brought up the steps about decision-making since it should always be practiced for effective results and conclusions!
