The history of United States says
that this country was established by the white men so with time and now they
have been holding the power. The whites have governed power in terms of money,
business and politics, so the term “white men of privilege.” It is mentioned on
page 85 that the hierarchies of power throughout our socialization processes have
come to take for granted, sometimes without being aware of the way in which we
situate ourselves along the continuum. I think movies and media are also
responsible to stereotype white men as explorers, adventurous, macho, travellers,
rulers, saviors and rich men in the society. No other race has been portrayed
more flamboyantly or epitomized as heroes like the white men. However, I
believe the times have changed because everyone has equal opportunity to prove
himself. Although it may take some time for the term “white men of privilege”
to break its bonds, time will definitely come when all of the diversity in the
US can make its own mark.
I agree that the media does portray white men as the men of power but as for white men of privilege I've always felt that the term was gradually degrading or disappearing really.
ReplyDeleteHave you noticed that white men were the first ones to develop their culture after they took America from the Natives? As a Chinese man I feel that they are gradually forgetting their origins as much as any other race is.
Many immigrants come to America for the "American Dream" then they raise spoiled American Children and adopt a more Western culture. White men were the first to adopt their culture and they are now first to either be bored of their own culture or decide their culture is not as cracked up to be.
Is white men of privilege legible anymore? Imagine a black man in a convenience store wearing a basketball jersey and gold chains, does he get suspected? Probably. Does a white man wearing high class business attire get suspected in the store? No. Does a white man wearing a basketball jersey and gold chains get suspected in the store? Probably.
This is just my opinion and example of why I think "white men of privilege" is slowly disappearing.
